Suspects Dead, Motive Sought After 14 Killed in California

A couple, Farook and Tashfeen Malik, killed 14 in a room at a social service center for the disabled.  The fact that only 14 people died is actually very lucky because the couple fired over 75 rounds into the crowded room.  These rounds were not directed towards any particular person so the motive is a big question at this time.  Farook is Muslim and had been in contact with extremist groups which could be a possible reason he would do something like this.  While this is possible, it could just be an angry working taking it out on his coworkers.  Earlier in the week he was involved in a very heated argument with one of the people found dead.  The confrontation was about their different views on Islam.

This story relates to our topic for a couple of reasons.  The first reason is what should be done about the right to bear arms.  While many feel this is a very great right to have, there is no doubt something must be done to prevent mass killings like this to occur.  Another way this topic relates to our class is because we talk about ISIS and the department of homeland security.  I think that since the U.S. Intelligence had known that Farook had been in contact with Islamic extremists, he should have been under great surveillance.  We learned that the department of homeland security has a budget of over 40 billion dollars annually which should allow them to have all the ability in the world to prevent a mass murder on U.S. soil.

  1. What a terrible tragedy, this is yet another mass shooting on U.S. soil. The department of homeland security really has no control over knowing who are the distant kids that will one day have a mental break and decide to mass murder. But they do have control over knowing who has contact overseas with Islamic terrorists, I feel this is an embarrassment to the department. Only because they just released a statement saying that they have no clue of any threats or planned terrorist attacks made to the U.S.
