House Approves Syrian Refugee Screening Bill, Defies Veto Threat

By an emphatic 289-137 vote, the House of Representatives passed the bill to improve the screening of the refugee immigrants.  While this bill still must be passed in the Senate, this is a great first step.  This question has been brought to the forefront because of the latest Paris massacre.  This bill is starting to become a big piece of emphasis for the Republican party.  While this is supported by almost every Republican, 47 Democrats also voted to pass the bill.  The White House does not agree with this bill.  Obama threatened to veto the bill because he believes the current process is a good system.

This relates to our class because of the talk we had today in class about this refugee problem.  While in class we debated whether or not they should be allowed in this country, this bill is similar because it would require more screening of the refugees.  Some people in class argued that it would be good because America was created like a "melting pot" but the Republicans believe that our safety is the number one priority.  This mindset is the one I have.  I believe that while these people are very helpless, I don't think it is Americas responsibility to pay for them.  We have to learn to take care of our own people before we take care of others.  There are 610,042 homeless people in America.  I think we should fix our own problems before we try to play a hero role for the rest of the world.

  1. I disagree I think Obama should allow these refugees a chance at a healthy safe life. However there should be precautions and background checks so we do not have the same thing happen again.
